This is an IQ tester. The object of the game is to get everyone across the river. This is a test some Japanese applicants have to take when applying for a job in Japan. The odd thing to me is, once you begin taking people across the river, you can't remember how you got them there when you have to start again. Once you begin this test, it's hard to stop. You feel so determined to get these people across. The instructions are listed below. After reading, click on the link. Enjoy! For my business tech students periods 1 & 8 indicate your solution as a post in your blog.
This is going to do your head in, but it can be done.
Apparently this is an IQ test given to job applicants in Japan: "Everybody has to cross the river".
The following rules apply:
Only 2 persons on the raft at a time
The father cannot stay with any of the daughters, without their mother's presence
The mother cannot stay with any of the sons, without their father's presence
The thief (striped shirt) cannot stay with any family member, if The Policeman is not there
Only the Father, the Mother and the Policeman know how to operate the raft
To start click on the big blue circle on the right.
To move the people click on them.
To move the raft click on the pole on the opposite side of the river
When you have finished, click on the "can you create links?" link for other web pages.

Posting from special journals can be a complicated process. Remember special journals are designed to "streamline" transactions. This means similar entries are recorded in the same location. In chapter 12 we divide the ledger into three parts. The general ledger still holds all of the cards but subsidiary ledgers are established to handle Accounts Receivable (customers) pg.. 283 and Accounts Payable (vendors or suppliers) see pg. 274. With the exception of the general journal each special journal will have individual amounts posted and column totals. Peruse section 12-5 for posting to a general ledger on pages 291-294. Peruse section 12-6 for posting column totals on pages 296-301. No handouts need to be submitted today. Review the parts before we take a look at the whole tomorrow.

In chapter 10 special journals were introduced. At this time we have two special journals, the Purchases and Cash Payments journals. The general journal (page 241) will be used to record "generic" entries throughout any month.
The Purchases journal (page 227) will directly handle merchandise bought on account. A merchandise business uses a purchases journal for items for resale only. The purchase of supplies is not recorded in a purchases journal because supplies are not for resale.
A Cash Payments journal (page 230-238) records entries for all checks written. This journal will have the most entries every month. Each time a partnership business writes a check the entry is recorded in cash payments. Both the journals will have column totals recorded at the end of each mont. It is not necessary to total the general journal.
Tomorrow we will have our largest classroom problem to date. We will have class in the cafeteria on Wednesday. Peruse your textbook pages today in chapter ten. Tomorrow's problem will have colored journal pages to help you with the entries.
Enjoy your day in accounting.
Mr. Morris

When recording entries in special journals there is still a need to use the general journal. We will utilize the general journal for transactions the use a memorandum (m) as a source document. General journal transactions are for the type of entries that occur less frequently. For today's problem 10-4 you need to download general journal (GJ2.xls) from www.c21accounting.com. Review pages 240-242 for "buying supplies on account" and "owner withdrawing merchandise".
Complete problem 10-4 for the month of October. Print with your name and submit.
On Tuesday we will work on problem 10-5 while using all three journals. Purchases, Cash Payments and the General Journal.
Enjoy your long weekend!
